From the Editor’s Desk

It’s finally happening! From dream to reality, that phrase has been a ringing theme throughout the journey from when we first opened our doors in 2016 at Westgate, to when we opened our second Harare branch, in Borrowdale, and today as we launch the TUDiki Magazine! A lot of hard work, sweat and tears have been invested into making this dream a reality. TUDiki is going into its fourth year and when the brand was born, our vision was to make the brand an invaluable resource for parents & guardians raising their children. We also wanted to be a source of joy and happiness for kids, over and above providing great quality clothes.

“It’s been a joy to watch the brand grow & develop into the idea I had envisioned.”

Looking at what we’ve achieved so far, I’d say that we’re doing pretty well. We’ve got our annual TUDiki Shower event which is going on its third year. And now we’ve got this baby, our TUDiki Magazine. With this magazine we hope to continue to build our legacy as the go-to source 02

for all things parenting and children. We will use this magazine to live out our vision; sharing advise and real and relatable stories about parenting from parents just like you. We want the magazine to be a space to showcase great kids and their awesome talents. The TUDiki magazine is, first and foremost, their magazine! And last but not least we want to continue building the community, enabling everyone in it to be heard, to share and to learn from all our shared experiences. If you have a business that you would like to advertise with us, or maybe you have a story for us to feature, please don’t hesitate to

On work, love & keeping the faith

Dr. Zanele Dinika

Dr. Zanele Dinika is as bubbly, down-to-earth, and as personable as her social media footprint implies! The 29-year-old trail-blazing dentist, mother, make-up artist, and now co-founder of a fashion brand took time out of her busy day to give us the run-down on all things Zanele. For her, it's all about the tribe you keep around you and a positive mindset.

In Conversation with

Dr. Zanele Dinika Let’s get back to basics. What has the journey to this moment been like? I’m a small-town girl with big-time dreams! And of all things that I do, dentistry has and always will be my first love! I trained at the University of Zimbabwe and did my residency at Howard Mission Hospital in Rural Chiweshe for 2 years. Not only did I want to serve the community, I also wanted to challenge myself. Being so far away from the city, if there was an issue, it would be up to me and me alone to deal with it! It was a really fulfilling time for me because I truly got to help the community, and helped transform their thinking around what dentistry is. I live to fix smiles and I love that about my job! Okay, let’s talk about GlamourBae. How did that business blossom? I’ve always loved makeup, and I always

knew that GlamourBae would be the name of my makeup business! I used to binge-watch a lot of YouTube back in college, and that’s where I learnt all my tricks. I guess you could say that my journey as a makeup artist started with a Vault Cosmetics competition (that I didn’t win) but it gave me the confidence to come out of my shell and really work on my skills. Then in 2017, I did makeup for a friend’s wedding and the rest is history. It seems like Transformation is a theme that runs through a lot of the work you do. Yeah, exactly. I love to beautify people, to transform them. Like I said, I live to fix smiles! I'm into aesthetic dentistry and with makeup, you can transform someone through beauty. You’re also a YouTuber! I’ve always been a creative

One of the things that pushed me to I used to be like that, especially with start was discovering this Nigerian makeup which was my first YouTuber, Dimma Umeh, and then side-hustle. And you’ve just launched House of Dinika, how has that process been? I’ve always wanted to design medical apparel and I love African print. So as I was coming up with this idea, and running it by my husband, he was like why not go all in and so I did! And what made it even better is that my mother-in-law is a professional tailor so it all kind of fell into place. With each new venture that you dive into, don’t you ever experience fear? Especially given the country we live in – how do you overcome emotional, mental, and economic hurdles and just plug yourself into doing the things

I feel like superwoman, like nothing can bring me down! There’s something about the process of motherhood that makes you feel unconquerable. It’s given me a new confidence. As a new mum who’s leaving no stone unturned, what advice would you give to other new mums or any other women who are a little bit scared to pursue their dreams? I would say life is too short for you to let it just pass by. And time is so precious, you can't go back and get it, so make the most of your now. You actually don’t have much of a choice. And train your mind. I’m lucky that I mould and train my mind to just put on blinders and run in the direction of had a great teacher in my husband. Watching other women achieving their goals. Recently I’ve been following Nyaradzo Dhilwayo and her brand Yanaya Lifestyle and Shingie Mangwiro and TUDiki. I remember when TUDiki was opening a new branch in Borrowdale and now this Magazine, I was so excited for you guys!

“My biggest inspiration is women achieving great things. It uplifts me; it makes all my goals also seem achievable.

That’s a different reaction compared to a lot of people. Most people have a little green monster that comes out when they see others’ success. How did you get to this stage of celebrating other people’s success as your own? I feel like I’ve always been like that, even in Uni. I remember I’d just say to myself, “I’m celebrating you because this is your time. My time will come!” And at the end of the day, life is all about perception and how you look at things. I could choose to be petty and still not have what I want. Or, I could be happy for their success and motivated to achieve my own goals. It’s all up to you! This pandemic was a lot. What are some of the things that helped you keep a level head? I was also scared in the beginning, especially as a dentist who was pregnant. It also didn't help that my husband was away in Germany where he's completing his PhD. But as I saw that the pandemic wasn’t going away, I realised that life has to go on. So, I took all the precautions I could and I prayed. Prayer really kept me grounded during

that time. The way I looked at it was, if I have fear, then I don’t trust God, and I know that I trust God, so my fear also fell away. Where do you see yourself and your brands in the next 5 years? I just want to let my life unfold. I’ve let every gift, and every talent I have come out and I want to continue doing that. One of my favourite books, The Alchemist, is the perfect explanation of my view of my future. In the book, a young man goes to a faraway land looking for riches only to find them, right where he started. That’s how I approach life, anything I want to achieve I just believe that it’s already taken care of! Raising

The Tech Generation Unlike previous generations, children today are growing up with technology, not growing into it. The internet can be great for kids. But is is imperative that we set boundaries in order to protect them from inappropriate material and predators!

The internet can be great for kids.

It’s a great source for education, and as seen with the recent COVID19 Pandemic – our kids did not go into a complete standstill when schools were closed. They were able to learn and adapt while still receiving their education from home! There is no doubt that the internet is an awesome advantage to have in the home 10

but online access comes with risks like inappropriate content, cyber bullying and online predators. And as parents and guardians there are ways we can help protect our kids as they browse the ‘net’.

Setting Tech Rules, Together

Alongside blocking inappropriate content and keeping an eye on their internet usage, it is so important to teach your

kids about safe and responsible online behavior. And, one of the best ways to help them understand is to set boundaries and rules together, discussing each rule and highlighting why it is essential that it be followed!

Basic Guidelines for Safe Browsing

1. 2.

Never post or trade personal pictures with strangers. Never reveal personal information, such as address, phone number, or school name or location.

3. Use only a screen name

and don't share paswords (other than with parents).

4.

Never agree to get together in person with anyone you met online without parent approval and/or supervision.

5. Never respond to a

threatening email, message, post, or text.

tell a parent or 6. Always another trusted adult

about any conversation online that was scary or

Help them understand by setting the rules together and explaining every step of the way!

Monitor and Protect

You are not always around, and kids will be kids. That is why it is important to make use of tools like Google Family Link for Android devices and Apple’s built-in parental control features. And there are many many other apps you can use to protect your children as they browse and play! The internet can be a scary place for a parent but it’s also a huge technological advancement that makes all our lives that much more convenient. The best advise we can give you is to always keep an open line of communication with your children and make sure that they feel comfortable talking to you about what they see online!

My name is Deileta and I am the owner and operator of Elev8ed Cre8ion. My husband and I created this company in 2018 soon after becoming parents. As a family of four, we know firsthand what the parenting journey is like with a new baby in town. This encouraged us to build a business that could help support parents in their parenting journey. Our goal is to make sure everyday parenting tasks are easier, more convenient, simplistic and fun. And as a family who travel often, the hassle of carrying multiple bags for even a day commute was a hassle and that birthed our inspiration to create the most functional backpack for the entire family. Our One-of-a-kind Ultimate Parent Backpack (UP Bag) is essentially 3 bags in 1. It's a diaper bag with XL capacity, a travel bag that's perfect for both short and long distance trips and a laptop bag that can fit up to a 17" laptop, tablet, power bank and more. The features make this the most versatile bag to hit the market. 12

The Up Bag can be used well beyond diaper days with it’s discreet design. It was designed to minimize the amount of bags a family would need to carry outside the home and has not only become the best backpack for traveling families, but it has also proven to be the perfect backpack for students, entrepreneurs, flight attendants, midwives, nurses and just about anyone who loves to stay organized while on the go.

The UP bag will be available in TUDiki stores in July. You can also pre-order it on the TUDiki website! CONTACT US +1-484-725-9282 Elev8edcre8ion.com elev8edcre8ion

The Importance of

Family Trusts “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children.” Proverbs 13:22 (NKJV) It is against this background that the importance of establishing a Family Trust for the benefit of our loved ones or those near and very dear to us comes into play.

Sharon is a registered legal practitioner with over ten years working experience . She is also a regular columnist for daily and weekly newspapers across Zimbabwe.

By Sharon Fadzai Manangazira

Take a moment to consider the following: What will advantages of a trust include: be the status of your wealth/ business should you or • This is a sure way ensure your spouse die today? What plan is there in place family wealth is easily passed for your children should you and your partner decide from one generation to anto divorce? other. There is continuity, & family fights are minimized.

What is a Trust?

A 'Trust Deed' is a legal document recognized at law as a 'person'. Assets are placed under the management of a Trust by a Founder who transfers some/ all of his property into the Trust’s name. The trust holds property or assets for a specific person or group, called the beneficiary. As a trust is a separate legal persona, trust assets and incomes are not owned outrightly by trustees or founders.

Advantages of a Trust Setting up a trust for your family has many benefits, the most important being that this is a sure way to protect your family should you die. Trusts offer more control than wills, as well as protection against legal action from anyone who is unhappy with the distribution of assets and decides to challenge. Some of the 14

A living trust is not made public, upon your death, so your estate will be distributed in private.

• Unlike a will, a trust can be customized so that no one can gain access to the inheritance without the beneficiary's consent.

• Creating a Family Trust and transferring your assets therein does not mean you are no longer in a position to derive benefit from . You can still use, enjoy, manage & control the assets both for yourself and your beneficiaries. • The decision to apportion property to a specific beneficiary lies squarely with the founders of the Trust. •

A Trust provides a smooth and quick transition of assets to the next generation. There are no transfer processes for an heir who is already a beneficiary of the Trust.

If the property is immovable property and earns rental income the Founder can prescribe how the proceeds from the Trust can be utilized especially for minor beneficiaries who are unable to efficiently manage financial affairs. E.g. education for kids.

• With a trust, you can protect your assets. Assets held in separate Family Trusts may be protected against future liability because the assets are owned by the Trust rather than the individuals at risk. •

Family Trusts also adequately provide for beneficiaries in need of special care, making sure that your children are well-protected even after you’re gone!

• •

Disadvantages of a Trust Although they have many undeniably attractive benefits, there are some disadvantages that Trusts persent which include but are not limited to:

Loss of direct ownership or control of assets. Assets transferred to a trust cease to be yours as the Founder. Where more control is desired, the trust deed is appropriately worded to suit the circumstance. Additional administration cost for meetings, accounting, trustee costs, etc. When a trustee is no longer trustworthy, or dies, or becomes insolvent and you need to replace them, that may take time administratively and may attract a fee for amendment of the Trust Deed. The registration of a Trust attracts legal fees for the Notary Public who registers it. Further costs depend on the complexity of the trust and the type of assets donated. There are costs involved in transferring assets from a personal estate into the Trust i.e. Capital Gains Tax.

Choosing your Trustees Trustees hold title to trust assets and have the power, subject to the trust deed, to deal with them as they see fit. You can choose anyone you want to be your trustee provided they are not expressly prohibited by the law. As a founder, you can also be a trustee! You are free to appoint independent and professional trustees. This will help protect trust as they are impartial towards beneficiaries especially after the death of the Founder.

Setting up your Trust 1. Engage the services of a notary public and not just a generic legal practitioner. It is important that you verify their status as a registered notary public by a Law Society of Zimbabwe so that you can receive practical and viable legal advice. 2. Choose a name for your trust 3. Appoint your trustees and choose well. They will be managing your assets. 4. Identify the specific assets like real estate or high value items you want to donate to the trust & their details. 5. Determine your beneficiaries (People who will benefit.)

A trust offers you and your family more support, more protection and more security. You should seriously consider setting up a trust for your family because it is one of the most secure solutions to protecting your wealth and your family’s well being after you are gone.

I’m an attorney and the founder a creative media Yeve of Sibanda brand.

We were so excited to have you on our panel for last year’s Tudiki Shower as a new mum! How has that experience been for you? What new things have you learnt about yourself?

Yeve Sibanda

Talks to us about striving for work-life harmony, the rewards of hardwork and keeping Zimbabwean culture & languages alive! Tell us about the journey to becoming the womanyou are today!

From a young age, I have always been creative at heart and I always wanted to be a lawyer. My family tells me I was always involved in performing and creative arts since as long as I can remember. Apparently when I was younger, I would tell stories for hours on end & the more engagement I got from the audience, the longer & funnier the stories became. Throughout my life, I have been happiest on stage singing, dancing, acting or public speaking. And today, 18

Being a mom has been the most rewarding & challenging role I’ve ever taken on. There’s so much I could write about but I think the biggest lesson for me has been about really trying to be present and soak in every minute. I’m a planner by nature and before having my daughter I would have weeks ahead planned in advance. But, the reality with a child is everything is unpredictable. I’ve learned to be present, go with the flow & just enjoy things as they happen. It’s really true that time flies with kids and they grow up so fast. I wouldn’t trade being a mom for anything. It’s by far my biggest blessing.

You’re a wife, a mum, a lawyer, and now an author as well. How do you balance all these important roles? I don’t believe that a true work-life balance exists. Instead, I believe in

work-life harmony. I’m striving for that. It’s not easy but I’m embracing rest, delegation, and outsourcing work where I can. I also remind myself why I do it all and what set me on this path.

What or who would you say are the most sturdy support pillars in your life?

What are your goals for Philisa Creatives? Where do you see the brand in the next 5-10 years? Philisa Creatives celebrates and teaches African native languages. Our goal is to amplify Black and African voices on the

Firstly, God. Secondly, my family. My mom and my husband have supported me from day one. And, finally, my daughter, who is my muse.

Tell us about your book, My first Shona and Ndebele words. My First Book of Shona and Ndebele Words is a short & engaging picture book set in Zimbabwe. It features a Black Zimbabwean brother and sister who introduce the reader to Shona and Ndebele (the two main native languages in Zimbabwe) vocabulary with accompanying English translations as they experience their daily life activities. The book transports readers to Zimbabwe and offers them a glimpse into Zimbabwean family life and culture.

What was your inspiration for writing it? I was inspired by my daughter and was propelled to create the book because I had made a commitment to teaching her our roots. I was also frustrated at not finding quality, modern Shona/Ndebele books and decided to write my own book.

continent as well as in the diaspora. In 5 years, we hope to be the go-to creative media brand for African language learning. I also hope to have written more books and become a more established cultural curator and thought leader.

You are clearly a driven woman. What advice would you give to other women who are sitting on big ideas they are too afraid to kick-start? There is never a perfect time to start. I always encourage people to take imperfect action. You can tweak and adjust as you go. But starting is the biggest step.

What would you say are things people need to take into consideration when venturing into a new business?

I think it’s different for everyone and depends on the business. But, if I could highlight just one thing that I think has global applicability, it would be this: you have to be genuinely invested emotionally, mentally (and fiscally) in your venture because if not, it’ll be easy to quit at the first sign of difficulty.

What is one quality that has helped carry you to where you are today? I think a combination of my faith, my creativity and my work ethic has brought me this far.

Where can we buy your book?

Last October, during our virtual TUDiki Shower event we sat with some awesome Zimbabwean Dads who shared their journeys through fatherhood with us.

r e

d l o

Takah Kapikinyu

h e c la

P

Gladmore Musarurwa

Q. What does Fatherhood mean to you? Most of our panelists agreed that fatherhood is a deision you make and that once made, you have to align and alter your priorities accordingly. “Being a father is like getting a job that doesn’t come with a job description or an instruction manual to follow.” But the advantage most fathers of today have is that we have a wealth of information that is readily available. Resources like the TUDiki shower give fathers access to advice, support and information that can help them in their journeys. Another thing all our panelists agreed on is the fact that you will never know what to do, this is a job you learn on your feet, as you’re running. 22

Onesimo Sibanda

Francis Chapuredima

Q. How do you navigate parenting in this modern world? All the Dads remarked that when they were growing up, their fathers were mostly disciplinarians. Takah talked about his desire to break the cycle, “When my son is unhappy I want him to come to me and tell me about it. I wanted to establish trust between us.” And all the dads agreed with the sentiment. Bigest takeaways: fatherhood is more than being a provider for your children and your family, its being their protector, and loving them as well. Fatherhood is being available and making sure your kids feel comfortable around you.” As the world evolves so do our responsibilities as parents. We cannot rely on traditional methods, because that is not the world our children are growing into.

Q. Let’s talk about supporting your spouse. What does supportive fatherhood look like? The most important thing is to ask for help should you need it. In all relationships communication is key; how will the other person know you need support if you don’t tell them? And to the Dads don’t just assume where your partner needs support. Ask her what she needs because support is more than help with chores around the house. You’ll find that they may need emotional, mental and even spiritual support. Onesimo remarked that it’s important that we look at the roles of father and mother as complimentary roles. “As parents we should aim to fill each other’s gaps and cover each other’s shortfalls.

In Conclusion Fatherhood is primarily a subjective journey that each father discovers with each new experience. And, along with your partner, each of you play unique and individual roles that will not look like the next couple - there is no one-size fits all when it comes to being parents. The conversation we had with these witty dads is available to watch online on our Facebook page. The conversation got so much more in-depth and we guarantee it will be a rewarding watch!

This month is all about fathers! Get your children to submit drawings of their awesome dads and all the reasons why they love them and you’ll get featured in next month’s Kidz Korner!

that work!

We all have our recipes that we’ve been using but which ones actually work?

For example, did you know that although mint contains menthol, there is no scientific proofthat it relieves congestion! That is why we have prepared this list of ingredients to add to your herbal tea that are proven to treat symptoms!

Herbal tea

Lemon A great source of Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an important nutrient for your body when you’re fighting a cold or virus. Ginger Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe a sore throat. It also helps to clear up your sinuses. Steam inhalation is one of the most widely used home remedies to soothe nasal congestion and relive cold symptoms. Also called steam therapy, it involves the inhalation of water vapor. The warm, moist air is thought to work by loosening the mucus in the nasal passages, throat, & lungs. For best results use a thick blanket so that as much of the steam remains in your bubble as you inhale it!

The New NORMAL

For the past year, we have been battling one of the most devastating pandemics the world has seen in years. And its clear that it will be a while until life can get back to normal. But what does our new normal look like? And as parents and guardians how do we protect our children and guide them through it? Mask etiquette: Teach your children how to wear their masks properly. You can start at home, encouraging them to practice wearing masks for short periods, gradually increasing the amount of time that they can tolerate the mask. Encourage proper hygiene: Establish consistent house rules about handwashing, including every time family members leave and come back home, after going to the bathroom, and before and after eating. Get Vaccinated: Vaccines are a great way to give you & your family’s immune system a greater fighting chance against the virus! It is free to get vaccinated in Zimbabwe and there are stations at almost every clinic, enquire at a clinic near you today! Encourage conversations: Talking to your children will help them understand that anyone can get the virus, no matter where they are from in the world. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's mental or physical health, make sure to contact your pediatrician.

5 Ways to Pray With Your kids!

We gift our children with a great foundation to a lifetime relationship with God when we teach them to pray. That is why it is important to discover fun and creative ways to pray with them to keep them interested and excited about their time with God.

Pray with Song One of the easiest ways to teach children to pray is through singing. Choose a song to learn with your kids and explain to them what the lyrics mean, so that as they sing they sing with intention.

Pray with Scripture Scripture Prayer: First, choose a Bible verse and use it as a prayer to begin and end each day with your children. Try John 3:18, Psalm 46:1 or Romans 15:13. Additionally, it may be helpful to have it posted by their bed to read together.

Pray with the body

Try the Five-Finger Prayer: In this prayer, each finger has something it stands for. For example: The thumb is for those closest to us. What each finger stands for is all up to you!

Pray with Gratitude

Sit together and take turns naming things that happened in your day that you are grateful for. It can be anything as simple as I’m grateful for the sun, or I’m grateful I’m alive; the purpose is to foster an attitude of gratitude.

Pumpkin Soup

Cut the pumpkin into 3cm slices. Cut the skin off and scrape seeds out and then cut into 4cm chunks. Place the pumpkin, onion, garlic, broth and water in a pot (liquid won't quite cover all the pumpkin) & bring to boil, uncovered Reduce heat and let simmer rapidly for about 10 mins or until pumpkin is tender (check with butter knife) Remove from heat and use a blender to blend until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper, stir in the cream (never boil soup after adding cream, it will split). Ladle soup into bowls, drizzle over a bit of cream, sprinkle with pepper and parsley if desired. Serve with bread or croutons!
